International Activities

History and culture are Berlin’s biggest calling card. Most recently, images of the symbolic events we organised to mark the major anniversaries of the fall of the Berlin Wall flashed around the world. Like these events, many of our artistic and participatory projects also serve to foster Berlin’s international networking.

Berlin has 17 sister cities worldwide. Over the years, we developed cultural programmes for partnership anniversaries with PARIS, ISTANBUL, MOSCOW, WARSAW, Los Angeles and Brussels. Our greatest strength in organising such events lies in our ability to effectively draw on our international network consisting of a variety of partners. For example, on the occasion of the 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF THE WALL, we invited people from all over the world to leave their artistic mark on 1,000 domino panels that we then symbolically "tore down". For its part, the LICHTGRENZE ("Border of Lights") erected to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall was supported by a peace network which included Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, North Korean human rights activist Yeonmi Park, NASA astronaut Ron Garan and many more. With the help of our network, we were also able to attract experts from such renowned institutions as the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Centre Pompidou Paris and the Serpentine Gallery in London as advisors for our "BASED IN BERLIN" exhibition. This prize-winning project was a co-production with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and explored GERMAN ART DURING THE COLD WAR ERA. It was shown in L.A., Nurnberg and Berlin. Together with Berlin-based partners, we also develop independent formats for creative-artistic exchange within Europe. Some of the most recent examples are "BRESLAU - BERLIN. EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURS" (with Zukunft Berlin) and "POP INTO BERLIN" (with visitBerlin and Berlin Partner).
