Berlin Art Week in the fall alongside Gallery Weekend in the spring are the major highlights of the Berlin art year. Founded six years ago as a consortium of various partners, it has now established itself as an important date on the international art calendar. For five days, Berlin Art Week addresses the latest developments in contemporary art and brings together many important players from Berlin's art world-the art fairs art berlin and Positions Berlin Art Fair as well as the major institutions of contemporary art, private collections, and project spaces. Under the auspices of Kulturprojekte Berlin, responsible for the coordination and communication of this event, they invite the public to a packed programme of exhibition and gallery openings, performances, award ceremonies, and numerous special guided tours. In September 2018, Berlin Art Week attracted around 120,000 art enthusiasts and art professionals from Berlin and around the world. Next Berlin Art Week will be held from 11 - 15 September.
The seventh Berlin Art Week took place from 26-30 September 2018. The varied program focused once again on the art fairs art berlin and Positions Berlin, which for the first time this year both took place in the hangars of the former airport Tempelhof. In 2018, visitors were able to enjoy large solo shows by Agnieszka Polska, Julian Charrière, and Lawrence Abu Hamdan, as well as performances and artistic interventions in urban space. In 2018, there was a special focus on photography, with the EMOP Opening Days of the European Month of Photography Berlin, also organized under the auspices of Kulturprojekte Berlin.
