The anniversaries of the five oldest and most prestigious academic institutions in Berlin were celebrated during the Year of Science: the Staatsbibliothek of Berlin celebrated 350 years since its founding; the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin 300 years since its founding; the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences its first charter in 1710 and opening in 1711; the Humboldt University 200 years since its founding and the Max Planck Society the founding of its forerunner, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society 100 years ago.
Berlin not only has a long history as a prime location for science, but also a promising future as a vital and diverse site for science of national and international significance. The aim was to present Berlin in a scientific context and to raise awareness of the importance of science, research, freedom of thought and curiosity above and beyond the confines of academic life. Our daily life and our prosperity are not possible without science and research.
In close cooperation with the selected institutions and the capital city campaign "be Berlin" Kulturprojekte Berlin developed the overall event programme and promotion concept, with the aim of creating a story arc for the entire year. Besides promoting countless individual events, Kulturprojekte Berlin was also the key point of contact for all institutions.
