Berlin commemorated the end of WWII and the liberation of Europe from Nazi dictatorship with a week of theme-based digital events.
The 75th anniversary of the liberation of Germany and Europe from Nazism on 8 May 2020 provided the occasion for the project titled “75th Anniversary of the End of WWII” – a digital journey back in time to the spring of 1945. We had originally worked together with many partners to create a comprehensive programme of events featuring a large open-air exhibition and festival on 8 May, but then came the nationwide shutdown prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, we made the decision to transfer the programme into the digital realm, drawing on generous support from the Lotto Stiftung Berlin (Lotto Foundation Berlin). Thanks to our many years of experience creating and implementing digital projects, it took us only a couple of weeks to successfully devise a brand new event concept using new media formats and embedded in a digital-based “theme week” from 2 to 8 May.
